Mind Control 101 – Part 3
So I’ve got some bacofoil around my head; I’ve got an EMF-balancing pendant hanging from my neck and I attend a regular support group to share the messages the government are beaming in to my head. Am I immune to the effects of mind control now?
As was noted in Part 2 of this short series of articles, governments have a history of experimenting on the unsuspecting and unwitting public. So, perhaps, there is no reason to assume that they are not doing so now – right at this very minute.
Enter V2K …
Claimed to be an ‘official military’ term V2K stands for Voice to Skull technology. That’s right – a device which will beam brain washing instructions, mind programming instructions or even,  guess Barry Manilow tunes with hidden subliminals directly into your brain.
There are people, out there, who genuinely believe that they are TI’s (targeted individuals) and that they are being experimented upon with a range of electronic devices which plant thoughts into their minds. Of course, such claims can immediately be dismissed as some form of mental illness, but are there any grounds, apart from a lack of trust in governments, to think that there is anything in behind these beliefs?
Well if I can trust my internet ‘search’ abilities I do find a Patent registered with the US Patents Office for a device which provides a..
“method of encoding an input audio signal a(t) to produce a double sideband output signal having a .omega..sub.c carrier frequency, which when transmitted to the head of a receiving subject, will by the radio frequency hearing effect induce a thermal-acoustic signal in the bone/tissue material of the head that replicates the input audio signal and is conducted by the bone/tissue structure of the head to the inner ear where it is demodulated by the normal processes of the cochlea and converted to nerve signals which are sent to the brain, thereby enabling intelligible speech to be perceived by the brain as any other nerve signal from the cochlea”
US Patents : 3563246 February 1971 Puharick 3629521 December 1971 Puharick 4835791
I think that constitutes voices in the head?
But does that automatically mean that TI’s are the unwitting victims of CIA-Secret Government Experimentation?
In the UK the TETRA System is actually claimed to be evidence of “Mass UK Mind Control Technology and the Zombification Of Britain’s Police” (CH4 News, Feb 5th, 2001).
One may wonder how this happens, well according to “leading psychotronic expert Tim Rifat)..
“The TETRA system pulses at 17.6 Hz broadcast at 400 MHz which is essentially the Pandora Project funded by the CIA in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Dr Ross Adey, the chief researcher on the Pandora Project has released a video to leading UK researchers which proves that not only does the TETRA system cause ELF zombification by massive release of calcium ions in the cerebral cortex and the nervous system, but the activated calcium ions also cause massive hormonal disturbances which lead to frenzied imbalances, emotional and physical states.”
Well Ross Adey is certainly a real person. He died in 2004 and his special interest was the effects of electromagnetic effects upon biological tissues. The University of California in its memoriam to him notes that he had…
“Especially provocative and revolutionary …. concepts suggestive of subthermal consequences, and the brain tissues’ sensitivity to weak intrinsic and environmental fields with biochemical, physiological, and behavioral effects induced by gradients orders of magnitude below those associated with classic synaptic excitation.”
The problem with ‘provocative’ and ‘revolutionary’ work is that it is just that ‘provocative’ and ‘revolutionary’. The truth of the matter is that despite the constant recycling of Adey’s work there seems to be little in the way of corroborative supporting research on the biological effects of EMF fields in the ranges claimed by ‘conspiracy theorists’ and TI supporters.
Of course, as in any area of ‘revolutionary’ science it will be possible to find individual reports, evangelical researchers, scientists and mavericks who will support the most left-field of ideas. Also, it must be remembered that scientific findings are by the very nature of scientific method tentative and are there to promote debate. This is why great care must be taken when starting with a belief or opinion and then looking for the scientific article or research to support it.
I am not an expert in EMF and ELF fields and their effect upon biology or neurology and the best I can do is remain open to the possibility whilst reading what those who do know about this stuff are saying.  It’s not good enough to say that so many scientists disagree with an existing consensus – not all scientists are created equal. They can of course have opinions (whether they be informed, emotional or both) but if they are commenting outside of their area of expertise and current research then they are as likely to be mistaken as anyone else.
So what is TETRA – well as far as I can see it’s a communications mast which allows for cross-border communications to work. I’m not necessarily convinced that Motorola really wants to create zombie police or zombie anything for that matter.
That brings us to Project PANDORA.
When we consider MKULTRA, Project Artichoke and the other, now declassified projects, the existence of a project to consider V2K technology is seemingly plausible.
Well one whistleblower, named Hawkspirit, informs us that..
“The United States of America’s Army’s “Military Thesaurus” defines “Voice to skull” (V2K) devices as follows:

“Voice to skull devices. . Nonlethal weapons which includes (1) a neuro-electromagnetic device which uses microwave transmission of sound into the skull of persons or animals by way of pulse-modulated microwave radiation; and (2) a silent sound device which can transmit sound into the skull of persons or animals. NOTE: the sound modulation may be voice or audio subliminal messages. . Acronym: V2K”.
I’ve no reason to assume that’s incorrect, although the idea of a published Military Thesaurus seems somewhat amusing.
Other US Patents that are relevant perhaps include:-

USP #6506148 January 14, 2003) Nervous system manipulation by EM fields from PC monitors Loos, Hendricus Physiological effects altered through E mag pulse.

USP #6488617 (December 3, 2002) Method and device for producing a desired brain state. Katz, Bruce. Magnetic Field alters brain state. A computational system alters various parameters until Gap is removed!

USP # 6430443 (August 6 2002) Method and apparatus for treating auditory hallucinations. Karellm, Manuel. Stimulating vestibulocochlear nerves or cochlea or cochlear regions will treat, auditory hallucinations.

USP # 6426919 (July 30, 2002) Portable and hand-held device for making humanly audible sounds… Gerosa, William. A portable device for making humanly audible sounds responsive to the detecting ultrasonic sound.

USP #6258022 (July 10, 2001) Behavior modification. Rose, John. Behavior modification of a human subject take place under hypnosis, when the subject is in a relaxed state. A machine playes back video to activate.

USP # 6017302 (January 25, 2000) Subliminal acoustic manipulation of nervous systems. Loos, Hendricus. In human subjects, sensory resonance can be excited by subliminal atmospheric acoustic pulses tuned to the resonance frequency. The 1/2 Hz sensory resonance affects the autonomic nervous system and may cause relaxation. Apparatus consists of a portable battery-powered source of weak subaudio acoustic radiation.

USPP # 6011991 (January 4, 2000) Communication system and method including brain wave analysis… Mardirossian, Aris. Method for enabling people to communicate by way of their monitored brain activity. Brain activity of an individual is monitored and transmitted to a remote location (e.g. by satellite). Remotely, brain waves are compared with pre-recorded normalized brain activity curves, patterns to determine a match!

Taken in terms of their broad descriptions it is fairly easy to see how these ‘patents’ could be seen as being ‘negative’, ‘clandestine’ but how many are in fact related to user control of IT systems, artificial limbs, brain research?
To see these patents as being part of some larger clandestine research project perhaps we need to identify the specific project to which they relate. The conspiracy websites identify this as Project Pandora.
What is interesting is that although this project was supposedly linked to MK Ultra and ran as part of it the first non-conspiracy friendly website I could find about Project Pandora was about the espionage film of the same title, about a mind control conspiracy, starring one of the Baldwin brothers.
A declassified document from 1966 identifies Project Pandora as an experiment in the nature and propagation of microwave radiation and not linked to mind control at all.
A 1984 documentary, Opening Pandoras box, which was claimed to be shown BBC Channel 4 contains the following quotes:
“The Soviets started bombarding the American Embassy in Moscow in 1953 and the U.S. government funded Project Pandora to find out why. Project Pandora was “a top secret multimillion dollar program”
“Dr. Robert Becker was an eminent scientist and was asked if central nervous system, CNS disturbances occur by microwave radiation. The Pandora Project found that the microwave radiation interferes with decision making capacity, causes chronic stress and low efficiency.”
Source: Opening Pandora’s Box”, 1984, produced by David Jones for Fulcrum Central Productions, aired on BBC Channel 4.
A quick internet search only finds references to the documentary but little about the documentary itself.
Well BBC 4 launched in March 2002 so the fact that the sites searched contain the same basic source error (it could not have been a documentary on BBC Channel 4 shown in 1984), we do have to question the reliability of the sites in question.
Within a topic that is about misinformation we really do have to be careful about the quality of the information from BOTH SIDES of the argument!
So what is the science behind V2K if any?
Well  Radio Frequency Hearing (RF Hearing) is fairly well documented.
RF induced sounds can be heard in a quiet environment is required and is similar to other common sounds such as a click, buzz, hiss, knock, or chirp.
In terms of RF or Microwave frequencies affecting behaviour  Dr. John A. D’Andrea, Brenda L. Cobb, John O. de Lorge amongst others have show no effects on behaviour with pulse tests on rhesus monkeys. Although pulsed microwaves can induce acoustic pressure waves in the brain (Olsen and James 1983) there is still little evidence to support these techniques as a viable method of systematic mind control.

Mind Control 101 – Part 2

Mind Control 101 : Part 2
The Korean War (1950 – 1953) not only provided the material for the novel, film and series MASH, but also reinvigorated political and scientific interest in the issue of Mind Control. It was during this war that captured US military personnel were paraded in front of television cameras denouncing their part in the war, apparently turning their backs on their beliefs and values and adopting communist principles.
It could be suggested that the Cold War paranoia that existed in the US and fuelled McCarthyism provided the idea fertilizer for the need to believe that people’s minds could be controlled. The idea that good ‘ole capitalist-democratic US military folk could ‘become communists’ by choice was something that was not considered. The POW’s that ‘turned their back on democracy’ and ‘adopted the communist evil’ must have had their ‘minds changed’ or ….. ‘washed’.
The concept of Brainwashing and Mind Control, popularised in such films as The Manchurian Candidate and the often forgotten, but superb, Ipcress File ‘must be a scientific’ reality – and the Koreans could do it!
In response to the evidence that ‘brianwashing’ had been done the US Office of Scientific Intelligence began what we now know as the MK ULTRA project.
MK ULTRA was a covert CIA operation which started in the 1950’s and continued into the 1960’s. Unwitting citizens, volunteer (and non volunteer) military personnel as well as hospital patients were all used in various experiments relating to ‘mind control’ and ‘brainwashing’
The project was brought to the public’s attention in the mid 1970’s and under a Freedom of Information request some 20,000 documents were brought before the US Senate 1977 when MKULTRA was declassified.
What makes this is conspiracy theorists dream come true is the fact that early investigations of the project were hampered by the then Head of the CIA Richard Helms ordering MKULTRA documents destroyed in 1973 when he possibly foresaw the potential political storm approaching.
Researchers link MKULTRA to a much earlier CIA project known as “Paperclip” which focused on bringing Nazi  Scientist and their work to the US. Some of these scientists had specific knowledge of ‘torture’ and ‘brainwashing’ techniques which the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency wanted to know more about. It is known that some scientists recruited under operation
Paperclip evaded trials for War Crimes – indeed US, Soviet and European agencies were involved in recruiting Nazi scientists and technologists in one would assume the belief that their contributions to the future outweighed their involvement in the past.
Paperclip gave rise to several  programmes dedicated to mind control  and torture techniques. Project Chatter explored the use of drugs in interrogation; Project Artichoke (aka Project Bluebird) which explored the use of hypnosis and morphine addiction.
Declassified material indicates that Project Artichoke was set up to answer the question…
“Can we get control of an individual to the point where he will do our bidding against his will and even against fundamental laws of nature, such as self-preservation?
Both Project Chatter and Project Artichoke were closed in 1953.
MK UKLTRA, under the directorship of Allen Dulles (Head of CIA) was officially started on 13th April  1953 and it continued the work of the previous projects.
Some of the highlights of MK ULTRA were:-
Administering LSD to CIA employees, military personnel, doctors, other government agents, prostitutes, mentally ill patients, and members of the general public in order to study their reactions
Investigating the effect of injecting a barbiturate into one arm and an amphetamine into the other of willing (?) subjects . The barbiturates were released into the person first, and as soon as the person began to fall asleep, the amphetamines were released. The person would then begin babbling incoherently, and it was sometimes possible to ask questions and get useful answers
An attempt to create hypnotically induced anxieties, and hypnotically increasing ability to learn and recall complex written matter alongside  studying hypnosis and polygraph examinations.
Hypnosis was also used in an attempt to increase the ability to observe and recall complex arrangements of physical objects as well as inducing anterograde and retrograde amnesia.
Hypnosis was used in conjunction with psychoactive drugs in order to ‘see what would happen’.
In Canada the MK ULTRA project funded the work of Donald Cameron who worked with schizophrenic patients with the aim of defining a scientifically based system for extracting information from ‘resistant sources.’
 I guess that means torture?
Camerons work, which  built upon the ideas of Donald Hebb, included sensory deprivation, electro-convulsive therapy (at ‘shock’ levels as high as forty time the ‘norm’) and various paralytic drugs.
Cameron was really working on ‘brain washing’ believing that his schizophrenic patients life would be improved by the ‘removal’ of existing memories and ‘reprogramming of the psyche’.
Some of his patients were placed into drug induced comas for weeks at a time whilst he played tapes of noise or simple repetitive statements.  Most of his patients had entered his hospital for minor problems such as anxiety disorders and post-natal depression and many of whom suffered permanently from his treatments.
The KUBARK Counterintelligence Interrogation Manual dated July 1963 was one of the outcomes of MK ULTRA.
The fact that so many MK ULTRA documents have been lost means that almost anyone can make claims and allegations in terms of the practical use of Mind Control technologies. The fact that in recent years other research, conducted with volunteers and under ethical guidelines, cast doubt on the use of many of the individual techniques as reliable tools for mass mind control, is often ignored by those who seek to promote disinformation for whatever reason.
There is no doubt that the human mind and the behaviours which result from mental processing can be influenced and, for want of a better word, manipulated. Psychological traumas induced by intense physical-emotional situations are after all result from the way the mind, the personality had responded to the environment the person has been exposed to (PTSD, Stockholm Syndrome, Anxiety Disorder) the question is perhaps less about direct attempts at mind control (torture, cult indoctrination) but the degree to which we can be controlled without our knowledge.
It’s perhaps a weird irony that one of the indicators of schizophrenia or dissociative personality disorder is the sense that personal perceptions, emotions and behaviours are being influenced by ‘someone’ or ‘something else’ which means that if there are people who are consciously aware of being ‘controlled’ then it is easy to dismiss them as being ‘ill’.
Great care and a healthy degree of skepticism needs to be brought into play when considering any current conspiracy claim relating Mind Control and MKULTRA.
The argument that ‘they got away with it in the past’ is, of course a statement of ‘fact’ and merely serves to confound those who are really looking for evidence, facts and answers. Where secrecy and lies have been discovered, trust and ‘plausible deniability’ is harder to accept.

Mind Control 101 – Part 1

Mind Control 101 : Part 1
For most of us the idea of Mind Control is very scary. The notion that someone else can influence the way an individual thinks, feels and acts seems to run contrary to what most of us consider as our basic human right to free will.
Well before we go any further we really need to look at the idea of free will and the things that have always and will always effect the way we think and feel.
Many neurologists do not accept the idea of ‘free will’ as they maintain that so much of what we think of as being a ‘conscious choice’ is what our unconscious processing has presented to us a choice or an option.
So much of our perceptual processing acts below the level of conscious thought, as it were, so that we only become ‘consciously’ aware of our environment, our thoughts, our feelings our internal ‘gatekeepers’ of consciousness let things through.
Perception is an active process and is a process we are not fully conscious of.
There is a school of thought which maintains that internal filters, which are driven by our needs, values, attitudes and beliefs, drive the perception process. In many ways then, we see, hear, feel, touch, taste and smell what we either expect to touch, taste, hear, feel, smell or believe we can touch, taste, feel, hear and smell.  This is why we misinterpret, misperceive and misrepresent things to ourselves.
Paraedolias of various kinds, seeing the Virgin Mary in a paintwork blemish or hearing words in random sounds, are the result of our minds trying to give meaning to what we are seeing and hearing.
Our senses are limited and our interpretation of those senses is further limited by the way our minds process the signals it receives. The reality we create internally is actually two steps removed from the reality that exists outside of ourselves.
What’s this got to do with mind control?
Well on one level the idea that you are actually making conscious decisions and choices is, neurologically speaking, untrue. Your emotions, beliefs, attitudes, expectations and desires will all affect the way your mind interprets what your senses perceive. So to control your mind all someone has to do is press the right emotional, value, belief and desire buttons in your unconscious mind.
That’s exactly what advertising is all about.
Modern advertising and PR was created in the 1920’s by Edward Bernays who was the nephew of Sigmund Freud.
Freud’s basic contribution to psychology was the suggestion that external human behaviour is the result of various unconscious drives, many of which are repressed. The repression of these drives, in Freuds terms, could cause psychoses and other behaviour disorders. The therapy he developed, psychoanalysis, maintained that individuals could explore these repressed desires through conversations and therapeutic encounters.
Bernays realized that if media messages could be targeted at the deep, self-focussed, desires and needs of the individual then those messages would (could) influence behaviour. His observations of the Nazi rise to power post World War 1, led him to see the power of propaganda and mass media. Bernays realized that ‘people’ en masse, could not be trusted to make decisions that would benefit humanity as a whole; more importantly he felt that it was imperative for the ‘masses’ to be guided in making the ‘right choices’.
Bernays adapted Freuds psychoanalytic approaches to marketing – focus groups were born. In these groups the individual could express their desires and needs so that emotionally powerful advertising could be created. It was not only the birth of consumerism, but the birth of a new kind of persuasion.
Advertising is Propaganda.
Notice how that sounds and feels.
Two words, one perhaps having a stronger emotional hook that the other.
Perhaps ‘advertising’ is a less emotionally negative word than ‘propaganda’?
The point is that mind control not simply something that happens in laboratories or within cults – it is something that is part of everyday life – only we call it persuasion and sales.
The Myth of Subliminal Persuasion
James Vicary is the advertising executive who popularized the, now urban legend, of the ‘eat popcorn’ and ‘drink coke’ subliminal messages in movies. In seems that this so called ‘experiment’ never really took place. In an interview in 1967, Vicary admitted that the original study never took place. Despite that the ‘eat popcorn’ and ‘drink coke’ experiment is firmly lodged in the public consciousness.
“By 1958, just nine months after the Vicary subliminal story first broke, 41 percent of survey respondents had heard of subliminal advertising. This figure climbed to 81 percent in the early 1980s, with more than 68 percent of those aware of the term believing that it was effective in selling products.”
Anthony Pratkanis

In his excellent review of subliminal advertising, Pratkanis (CSI 16.3 1992) concludes that there is no evidence for the effectiveness of subliminal advertising in terms of controlling or directing large scale behavioural changes. However, this author feels, that if placed within a context of other psycho-emotional techniques, it may well influence emotions which often drive behaviours.
Propoganda (advertising) is not a one-hit thing. It is through continual exposure to ideas, images, subtle perceptual cues and so forth that ideas and opinions are shaped.  In this regard then, one-hit subliminal messaging, may not work in terms of effecting behaviour but adds to the cumulative effects of persuasion.
The Korean War is responsible for the modern interest in Mind Control and the wealth of conspiracy theories that revolve around this idea…. but that’s for the next instalment
